Are you looking for an opportunity to accelerate your dental career with essential intra-oral skills? If you’re a level II dental assistant or a dental hygienist who hasn’t worked in an orthodontic practice, our two-day Practical Orthodontic Skills course is for you! Learn the fundamental theory and practical techniques you need to perform orthodontic procedures* in dental practices across Ontario.

Led by an esteemed registered dental specialist in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, this course will briefly review the history of orthodontics, give an overview of orthodontic records, cover diagnosis, treatment planning, and the use of standard, popular orthodontic appliances and instruments. Seating is limited to 30 participants.

*Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to confidently perform four intra-oral procedures referenced in the RCDSO’s Standard of Practice for Level II Dental Assistants.

Learning Outcomes & Benefits

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to confidently perform four intra-oral procedures referenced in the RCDSO’s Standard of Practice for Level II Dental Assistants: 

  • Place and cement bands, brackets and passive space-maintainers and orthodontic appliances
  • Place attachments for orthodontic purposes in conjunction with clear aligner therapy
  • Remove bands, brackets and passive space-maintainers and orthodontic appliances
  • Take non-alginate conventional impressions for the fabrication of orthodontic appliances
  • Perform other skills as permitted for dental hygienists

*Due to regulatory restrictions, some orthodontic procedures can only be performed by dentists and registered dental hygienists (with an order from a dentist) in practice. In this course, we will review orthodontic procedures that can be performed by Level II Dental assistants under the Standard of Practice for the Performance of Intra-Oral Procedures that are Not Controlled Acts by Preventive Dental Assistants, Level II Dental Assistants and Registered Dental Hygienists and additional skills that are permitted for dental hygienists.

Dr. Ziad Omar is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a registered dental specialist in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics who is actively engaged in clinical practice. He is also a former Adjunct Clinical Professor at Western University, London, Ont.
